Born March 1, 1914 in Nara Prefecture, Ebisu Taizan (Ebisu Masao) studied shakuhachi under Yoshida Renzan of the Tozan-ryū and Hiratsuka Kōzan of the Kōzan-ryu. He began teaching in 1935. During a career spanning more than 40 years, he belonged to the Korei Hogaku-kai and was the head of the Taiyō-kai.
